Dimensions: 200 × 135 mm (text space: 140 x 100-105 mm (ff. 1r-52v); 155-160 x 100 mm (ff. 53r-68v); 175 x 100 mm (f. 69r)).
Foliation: ff. 163 (+ 5 unfoliated flyleaves at the beginning + 3 at the end); f. [iv], f. [v], f. 1* and f. [164] are parchment flyleaves.
Binding: British Museum/ British Library-in house. Rebound in 1962.

Henry Savile of Banke (b. 1568, d. 1617), collector of manuscripts: owned all 4 parts of the manuscript separately as his MSS 137, 183, 188 (see Watson, The Manuscripts of Henry Savile (1969), p. 54 (no. 188)).
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician: cited in Cotton's catalogues (see Tite, Early Records (2003), pp. 183-84); table of content written by his librarian Richard James (ff. [i*]-[i*]verso); his bookplate (front outside cover).
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
