f. 74r: A note signed York: 'My lord Saturday is the day/ let 4 great barrels of powder come away.' This appears to be the handwriting of Charles I when young. This item is explained by an entry in Additional MS 28625 f. 8, Lord Carew’s letter book. Henry Prince of Wales gave his brother, then Duke of York and afterwards Charles I, a pinnace called the Disdain, and that this gunpowder was required for an expedition of the two young princes on May 1608 in the pinnace.

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician.
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
