By descent to his son, Sir Thomas Cotton, Bt (1594-1662), and his grandson, Sir John Cotton, Bt (1621-1702).
1702: Sir John Cotton, Bt, bequeathed the collection of books and manuscripts to trustees 'for Publick Use and Advantage', 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
1753: The Cotton collection formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum.
