Origin:
England (all four parts).
Part 2 (ff. 37–125) is largely in the hand of Laurence Nowell, antiquary (1530–c. 1570).
Provenance:
ff. 2–36:
William Camden, historian and herald (1551–1623): owned and annotated.
ff. 37–125:
William Lambarde, antiquary and lawyer (1536–1601): owned in 1574 and annotated several pages.
John Joscelyn, Old English scholar and Church of England clergyman (1529–1603): owned.
Sir Robert Cotton, 1st baronet, antiquary and politician (1571–1631): owned by 1612 when loaned to Francis Tate (1560–1616), judge and antiquary: Tite, The Early Records, p. 208. Also see below.
ff. 229–249:
William Camden, historian and herald (1551–1623): owned and added table of contnts on ff. 247v–248r.
All four parts:
Sir Robert Cotton, 1st baronet, antiquary and politician (1571–1631). Cotton's signature is found on f. 2r ('Ro: Cotton Bruceus'), f. 126r (('Ro: Cotton Bruceus'), f. 229r ('Ro: Cotton Bruceus'). The date '1584' preceding the signature on f. 126r is probably not in Cotton's hand: Tite, The Early Records, p. 208.
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (1594–1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton (1621–1702), 3rd baronet. Sir John Cotton bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7.
Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
