Provenance:
The manuscript is the work of a single scribe in the 1st half or the 1st quarter of the 12th century, although some aspects of the script change from f. 92r (see Treharne, 'Production' (2000), pp. 21-22).
?13th-century notes (ff. 103r-v, 104r-v, 105v, 106r; on the dating, see Treharne, 'Production' (2000), p. 27).
Later annotation (f. 132v).
William Bowyer (d. 1569/70), antiquary: inscribed 'Sum Guiliel. Bowyer 1565), but visible under ultraviolet light (f. 2r; transcribed by Wanley, Librorum Veterum Septentrionalium Catalogus (1705), p. 239).
John Joscelyn (b. 1529, d. 1603), Old English scholar and Church of England clergyman: his notes throughout (for example, ff. 17v, 131r, 134r, 136v-137r).
Henry Elsynge (d. 1635), parliamentary official and scholar: according to Joscelyn, acquired the manuscript from William Bowyer (see Cotton MS Vespasian D VII and Kleist, 'Anglo-Saxon Homiliaries' (2007), p. 478).
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician: acquired from Elsynge in 1597 (see Kleist, 'Anglo-Saxon Homiliaries' (2007), p. 478). Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet: his signature (f. 2r).
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
