- Title:
- Gaetano Donizetti: 'Poliuto'
- Scope & Content:
- 'Poliuto', opera seria in 3 acts, libretto by Salvatore Cammarano after Pierre Corneille. Composed for performance at Naples, 1838, but not passed by the censor. Rewritten as 'Les Martyrs', opera in 4 acts with libretto in French by Eugene Scribe, and first performed at the Paris Opéra on 10 April 1840. The original 3 act Italian version was first performed in Naples in 1848. First performed in London at Covent Garden in Italian as 'I Martiri' (re-translated by Calisto Bassi) in 1852. Excerpts only were given at Her Majesty's Theatre as part of gala or benefit performances in 1857 and 1858. A report made by A. Weatherson of the Donizetti Society on 29 January 1990 is kept with the score.Largest size 300 x 210mm. 1. Full score; [1838, 1840 or 1841]. Caption title 'Poliuto. Donizetti', in the composer's hand. In 3 acts. Text in Italian. On green paper, with an Italian order of scoring. Includes corrections apparently in the composer's hand. Act 3, scene 3 and 4 are absent; a slip formerly pinned to the page reads 'Duetto taken out for concert'. Scene 5 formerly had a cut made with a paste-over and pinning.2. Libretto; [1838]. Title on front cover 'Poliuto. Tragedia lirica in 3 atti'. Text in Italian. Paper has watermark of a stag and the letters 'D.S.G.' The libretto is dateable to 1838 by the information on the composer, '...Gaetano Donizetti maestro onorario di SAR il Principe di Salerno, e maestro di contrappunto e composizione al Real Conservatorio di Napoli'. At the end there is a declaration of authenticity in Salvatore Cammarano's hand; there are several corrections throughout, also apparently in the librettist's hand.
