- Scope & Content:
-
The file comprises:
Commentary (2011) by Butterworth on letters 19-22 below. Typescript, 1 sheet.
Letter 19: Ballard to Butterworth, 18 August 1999. Declines to write an introduction to the Savoy Books edition (2000) of Maurice Richardson, The Exploits of Engelbrecht ('Work pressures are too great'), but provides two sentences that may be used as 'a quote'. Autograph, 1 sheet, with envelope.
Letter 20: Ballard to Butterworth, 7 September 2005. Declining Butterworth's request to reprint Crash as a limited edition (which would have included a compact disc featuring Fenella Fielding reading): 'I've always disliked "book worship" in any form'. Autograph, 1 sheet, with envelope.
Letter 21: Butterworth to Ballard, 8 September 2005. Clarifies his intention with regard to Crash: 'We were inspired to try something with Fenella after listening to what Rick Reuben had done with Johnny Cash, ie, a marriage of opposites'. Asks if the compact disc of Fielding reading could be released separately. Unsigned copy letter, typescript, 2 sheets.
Letter 22: Ballard to Butterworth, 10 September 2005. Refuses to allow publication of Fielding reading Crash: 'I like to think of the novel as just that - a book to be held & read, flung into the waste basket or whatever'. Autograph, 1 sheet, with envelope.
