- Letters to Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles from a variety of persons (with index)
- Scope & Content:
- This file contains a letters written to Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles and Lady Sophia Raffles by a variety of persons, largely in the period 1823-26. During this period the Raffles family suffered the disaster of the burning of the ship Fame, on which they were returning to England with all thier possessions. Amongst these letters are many condolences offered and references to this disaster. These letters also contain information on matters of state regarding the adminstration of Benkulen and Singapore. Many of the correspondants are fellow naturalists, zoologists and botonists interested in the drawings and specimens of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. Among the notable correspondants are William Wilberforce, who shared Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles' abhorrence of slavery and complained often in his letters about his deteriorating health and eyes. Robert Jameson, who was responsible for the Edinburgh University Museum which included some of Raffles' specimens. Also included is a letter from Mr Arnot which relates the sequence of events that led to his transportation from Fort Marlborough, leaving him penniless and he beseeches the assistance of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. Folio 78 is missing; the letter to Lady Raffles recorded in the index is presumed to be the missing item.
