Labelled ''No. 8'' by Dodgson this diary contains entries dating from 9th May 1862 to 6th September 1864. In the diary Dodgson writes about his life in Oxford, photography and his work at Christ Church College.
The volume includes a number of references to the creation of ''Alice''s Adventures Under Ground'', which Dodgson first told to Alice, Edith and Lorina Liddell on a boat trip on 4th July 1862 (ff.14v-15r). Dodgson notes his progress in writing the story including his difficulties in illustrating the manuscript. In 1863 Dodgson writes that he has been encouraged by friends to publish the manuscript (f.75r) and in April 1864 records that the artist, John Tenniel has agreed to illustrate the published volume.
