Material: Parchment and (ff 1*, 324) paper.

Foliation: ff 1*+324 (f. 1* is an early modern paper upper flyleaf; + 2 unfoliated modern paper flyleaves at the beginning and 3 and the end).

Dimensions: 265 x 190 mm.

Ruling: 190 x 120 mm, 26-30 lines per page (ff 1-154 ruled 31 lines, written 29 or 28 lines), Leroy 22B1o (some folios with an extra vertical in the right margin).

Binding: Brown morocco covers with Harley arms stamped in gold at centre of covers. Rebacked with additions at the British Museum (cf. Harley MS 6325).

Scribe: Georgios Galesiotes (Repertorium 1A no. 57).

Decoration: Headpieces with geometric and foliate decoration and initials with foliate decoration in gold and/or colours (ff 2r, 44r, 73r, 121r, 163r). Titles in display capitals in gold or red (ff 2r, 44r, 73r, 121r, 163r). Rubrics, decorated initials and scholia in red.

Custodial History:

Origin: Eastern Mediterranean.

Provenance:

Φίλιππος ἱερεὺς τὸ ἐπίκλην Λίταρχος: sold to his cousin Ἰωάννης for 500 aspers on 17 June 1587: inscription (f 323r).

Ἰωάννης Μάρκος protosynkellos: purchased from his cousin Φίλιππος.

Ἰάκωβος ἱερομόναχος: purchased in November 1705: inscriptions (ff 1*r, 324v).? Mount Athos: owned and brought from there to be bound at Thessalonica, according to Wanley: Diary (1966) p. 368.

Bernard Mould (b. c. 1683; d. 1744), chaplain at Smyrna: acquired in Smyrna in 1722, his inscription 'Bernard Mould Smyrna 1722' (f 1r); sold to Edward Harley on 28 July 1725: Wright (1972) p. 246.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts, inscribed as usual by their librarian, Humfrey Wanley, 'n. 2. 28 die Julij, A.D. 1725' (f 1*r).

Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
