Dimensions: 200 x 150 mm (text space; 140 x 100 mm), except f. 2: 275 x 375 mm; f. 145: 355 x 280 mm; f. 204: 330 x 335 mm.
Foliation: ff. xi + 372 (v of xi paper flyleaves are from the original manuscript; ff. 1, 2, 145, 204, 372 are leaves excised from printed books). Quire signatures in the form of letters at the beginning of each quire.
Script: Cursive.
Binding: British Museum/British Library in-house binding; rebound in 1967.

Origin: Produced by a Jesuit: includes numerous Jesuit emblems of 'IHS' (e.g. ff. 86v, 120r, 131v), some with initials 'MA', and the date 1605 (f. 86r); perhaps in the Southern Netherlands.
Provenance:
A fragment of a title page of a printed book including a coat of arms identified as those of Thomas Aquinas, 'Insigna D. Thomae et comitum de Aquino, anno 1606' (f. 1v).
A fragment of a title page of a printed book with large coats of arms of a cardinal, with a motto 'Semper ad Arcton', and a fragment of the title reading 'et per illustri viro domi[ni] [Gu]ilielmi Richardoto ...Apostolicae protonota... S. Amati apud Duacenses praeposi..., refering to Guillaume Richardot (d. 1670), baron of Lembeek and cout of Galmaarden in 1623, educated in the house of the humanist Justus Lipsius, provost of St Amé, Douai, later chancellor of the Univeristy of Douai.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta, née Cavendish Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
