At a view of frankpledge with the great court of William Weston, prior of the hospital of St John of Jerusalem of England of the manor of Normanton, held at Chesterfield on 22 April 1535 in the time of Sir Ambrose Cave, knight, preceptor of the same, the lord by his bailiff conceded from his hands to Nicholas Wodhowse of London, pewterer, son of Richard Wodhowse once of Brampton, deceased, a messuage with toft and croft with all lands in Bagthorpe within the soke of Brampton, once of the said Richard, now in the lord's hand by reason of the forfeiture made by the said Richard's heir because he did not come to make agreement with the lord for a fine for the said messuage and lands according to the custom of the manor. The messuage and lands were delivered to the said Nicholas in full court and he was admitted; entry-fine, £4.And at a view of frankpledge with the great court of the said prior, held at Chesterfield on 1 October 1535, came Richard Giles and Elizabeth his wife and Thomas Gyles their son and heir apparent, and surrendered to the said Nicholas Woodhowse and his heirs all their right in the above messuage and lands, to hold by the rod at the lord's will according to the custom of the manor.In the same court Nicholas Wodhowse appeared in person and surrendered into the lord's hand a moiety of the said messuage to the use of the said Richard Gyles, Elizabeth and Thomas, and the heirs of the said Thomas, to whom seisin was given, to hold as above; they gave 10s. entry-fine, 1d. to the clerk and 1d. to the bedel, and were admitted.Certified a true copy of the roll by Adam Gyre.
