At a view of frankpledge in the 'Curia Magna' (great court), of Edward Lowe esquire of his manors of Alderwasley and Ashleyhay, held at Alderwasley, it was reported that Adam Wolley gentleman held by copyhold a messuage with buildings thereon in Ashleyhay with other lands there, late in the tenure of Richard Waterfall, and another messuage with other lands in Alderwasley, late in the tenure of Richard Vicars. and that the said Adam in his lifetime at a small court held at Alderwashley on 4 September 4 James I (1606), surrendered to the hands of the lord the aforesaid messuages to the use of the said Adam for his life, and after his death to the use of his will and testament; and the said Adam in his last will, dated 24 September1616, bequeathed the said messuages to William Wolley, gentleman, his son and heir apparent (recital of bequest in his will, in English); which said William was present at a small court, and was admitted; entry-fine, £12.Thomas Alsopp, steward.
