Sale by Sir Harry Grey, knight, lord Grey, and Dame Margaret his wife, to William Roodes of Nottingham, of all trees, wood, underwood and brush now growing in a close of the said Harry lord Grey called Knowthall [Knowts Hall] lying between Boterley park on the west and Codnor park on the east, and abutting on the highway leading from Derby to Mansfield on the north, and upon a lane that goes towards Ripley on the south, except all 'holyn' (holly) trees, crab trees and trees that grow within 20 feet next adjoining the pale of Codnor park as far as the said close adjoining to the same pale, and all trees growing within 20 feet next adjoining to the same pale towards Ripley hedge, and except that the said William shall leave standing in the said close sufficient trees for 'Weyvers ichoon of the compasse' 6 foot 20 inches from the ground there as the grove of the wood will so serve and in other places as the quantity of the grove will suffice to leave after the quantity of like rate thereof, with free entry and issue to the same, from the date of this Indenture to St Michael in 1478; and also the said Harry lord Grey and Dame Margaret grant to the said William that it shall be lawful for him during this term at his own cost to make out of the said close into the said park of Codnor and so through the same park sufficient ways in divers places most expedient to carry wains, carts and horses from the said close to Nottingham, Derby and Newark so that they keep the same park closed with gates for saving of the deer being in the same, and that it shall be lawful to him during the same term within the said close to make sawpits or pits for sawing of timber, and also to have and take from the said close during the said term turf and earth sufficient for making of charcoal without disturbance; consideration, £17.10s., namely £9 he has paid at the commandment of the said lord Grey to Richard Wodburn, gentleman, at the day of the making of this indenture, and shall then pay to the same lord Grey at the Nativity of the B.V.M. next ensuing after the date hereof, £8.10s.
