Account of the descent of the manor of Unstone from Sir Richard Stretton, knight, lord of Unstone, who sold the lordship of Unstone to Sara of Neubolt [Newbold] and Adam her son, which Adam held it for his life and, dying without heirs of his body, was succeeded by his brother Richard, and on the latter's death by his brother Henry who died in 'a thowsand ccc. xl. ix' (1349).And the said Henry Newbolt had 2 daughters and heirs, Agnes and Maud, who married respectively John Grey and Richard Tetlow, who each held half the manor in the right of their wives, and it was agreed that the said John Grey should hold the evidences and deeds.And the said John had a son called Thomas that was heir of one half part and married and had a son and heir John; and the said Thomas seised 'Sir' Richard Gomfrey, parson of Tadenhill in the manor of Unstone, viz. of his half lordship, who released the same back to the said Thomas for life; and the said John never married and had no heirs, and William Woderofe made claim to the half lordship as he was next heir to the said Richard Gomfrey, so the said John got a relief of the said William in the time of Henry V, and then sold the said half lordship to William Aston of Lond[on], and for security of covenant between them he 'feffede in' with the said William Woderof and John Bamsted and after that the bishop of Durham agreed with both William Aston and John Gray to have the bargain of the said lordship for 100 marks, so that the said John should have the said lands for life without waste; and when the said John Gray died, Christopher Belfeld, Hugh Burdsell and Roger Burdishill made claim and entered as heirs and desired the freehold of the said bishop and other feoffees, so the said bishop sued assize at Derby and on the strength of this the sheriff let him have entry to the said half lordship, and so the said Christopher, Hugh and Roger were caused great damage.And of the other moiety, Richard Tettlow had 3 daughters and heirs, who were married to ... Burdhill, [blank] Schadirtowne and A... Belfield, and held the half lordship, and Alys who was the wife of Schadirtown had issue 4 sons, James, Richard, Thomas and Ralph, which Alys in her widowhood gave to the said Richard her younger son all her part of the half lordship, who sold the same to Thomas Bulloke in time of Henry IV, and then Ralph Belfeld, Hugh Burdishill and John the son of Thomas Bulloke divided the demense lands of half the lordship of Unstone into 3 parts, of which William Button held the part that fell to Hugh Burdishill, Thomas Wodhows held to farm the part that fell to Ralph Belfeld, and Roger Curtes held the part that fell to John Bullock.
