Inqusitition post mortem taken at Derby before Richard Lucas, escheator of the county of Derby, on the death of Sir Ralph Langford by the oaths of Mark Draycott, gentleman, John Potter, Thomas Haye, Thomas Bradshawe, John Pymme, William Rossell, Thomas Buntyng, John Townerewe, William Meyre, Arthur Kynder, John Stephynson, John Spencer, Robert Sowter, Edward Parker, George Bradbury, Henry Sowter and Henry Fowler, yeomen, who say that Nicholas Lanford is son and heir of the said Ralph Langford and is aged 12 years and more, and holds the manors of Longford, Bubton alias Bubbington, Mammerton and the advowson of the church of Longford, of Richard [Sampson], bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, for 2 knights' fees, and that a moiety of the manors of Morton and North Wingfield are held of Francis [Talbot], earl of Shrewsbury as of his barony of Crich, and that a moiety of the manor of Wingerworth is held of Richard Curson, esquire, and that a moiety of the manor of Edensor is held of Peter Frechewell esquire as of his manor of Edensor, and that a moiety of the manor of Normanton is held of the heirs of Sir Edward Grevell, knight, now deceased, Thomas Babyngton esquire and the heirs of Meryng as of the manor of Alfreton, and that a moiety of the manor of Brampton is held of the said earl of Shrewsbury as of his manor of 'Cossehall' in Brampton, and that a moiety of the manor of Pilsley is held of the King; and also the jurors say that Ralph Langford by a deed dated 28 January, 29 Henry VIII, enfeoffed William Hollys, son of Sir William Hollys, Thomas Fytzherbert [Fitzherbert], son and heir of Sir Anthony Fytyzherbert, in all his manors and lands in the counties of Derby, Lincoln, Warwick, Stafford, Lancaster, Wales and in the Marches of Wales; and they also say that the said Ralph by another charter dated 30 November 38 Henry VIII, gave to Robert Watson his servant an annuity of 4 marks for life out of certain lands together with pasture for 2 horses in the park of Longford; and lastly they say that the said Ralph died on 23 September last past and held no other lands of the King in the said county.[Signed] 'Per me Richard' Lucas, exchator'.
