Extract from a Plea Roll for the county of Chester, held before James de le Holt, justice of Chester, of a recovery by Sir William de Atherton, knight, son of Agnes, daughter of Sir Ralph de Vernon, knight, son of Richard, son of Ralph de Vernon, junior, of the manor of Thurstaston, co. Chesh., from John, son of John de Whitmore, and Alesia, his wife. Reciting that a Fine was levied in the county of Chester on Tuesday before St Thomas the apostle, 19 Edward II (17 December 1325), between William, son of Peter Brichull, and Cecily his wife, and John de Sydenston, chaplain, for the manor of Thurstaston, which the said John had of the grant of the said William and Cecily, for the use of the same and the heirs of their bodies, with remainders, if the said Cecily died without issue, to Richard, son of Ralph Vernon of Shipbrooke junior, then to William and to Robert, brothers of the said Richard, to Maud, sister of the said Robert, to Ralph Vernon de Shipbrooke, to Sir William de Atherton, knight, son of Agnes, daughter of Sir Ralph de Vernon; and it happened that William, son of Peter and Cecily, and the sons of the said Ralph Vernon, died without heirs, and that the said Agnes died, and that John, son of John de Whitmore, and Alesia his wife entered the said manor against this settlement. Now Sir William de Atherton pleads by Henry Gartsyde his attorney, and John and Alesia by John Tryket their attorney.
