Exemplification of an inspeximus of a Chancery Decree, made 7 November, 21 James I [1623], in a suit between John Gell of Hopton, co. Derby, esquire, and Richard Tofte, John Lowe, Edward Valence and Ralph James, defendants, concerning the third part of the tithes of lead ore in Bakewell, Tideswell and Hope, co. Derby, which descended to John Gell, esquire, from Ralph Gell, by purchase from Henry Williams, then late dean of the cathedral church of Lichfield, co. Staff., and the chapter of the same church, by a deed sealed in July 3 Edward VI, 1549, and at a yearly rent of £43.2s.10d., confirmed by the bishop, and which came to Anthony Gell, and then to Thomas Gell, his brother and heir, who died about 72 years ago, and then to the said John Gell, son and heir of the said Thomas, being then young and in ward to the Crown; but in '11 of the king that now is', the defendants and other miners within the parish of Bakewell refused to pay the due rents, and the matter came to trial on 26 November 1619 and 21 June 1620; further accounts of the actions of Chancery follow.[Signed] Jekyll Rooke.
