‘MISS ALICE MAUD HER MUSICK BOOK’: arias and keyboard music; 1732-4. English, written in ink on paper ruled with six staves, in one principal hand, with additions in other hands on ff. 6, 13v and 14 and some small additions of ornaments in pencil on ff. 9v-10. The songs and arias are all for soprano and basso continuo, and the pieces on the reversed ff. 32v-21v are all for solo keyboard instrument. One folio has been removed between ff. 11 and 12 after the music was written, and one between ff. 26 and 27 before the music was written. Inscribed with the name ‘Al[l]ice Maud’ several times on ff. i v and ii, dated 1732 and ‘began March 4th 1733/4’, also with the names ‘Emma Maude’ (f. i v) and ‘Betty Moore’ (f. ii).

2. ff. 1v-2. ‘Ye Gentle gales’, song. The words of the second, third and fourth verses are written on f. 2. Two printed single-sheet editions of this song, with minor variants, are at the Music pressmarks G.296.l.(4.) (printed by R. Falkener, circa 1770) and G.316.f.(138.) (circa 1735).
3. ff. 2v-3. ‘Scotch Song, Beneath a Beech’s grateful Shade’. The words are attributed to R. Crawfurd in another setting of this song at G.303.(81.).
4. ff. 3v-5v. George Frideric Handel: aria, ‘Sei crudele’.
5. ff. 6v-9. Handel: ‘Sgombro [recte Sgombra] del anima’, aria from ‘Siroe’ (1728).
6. ff. 9v-11v. Handel: ‘Be kind and love’, aria from ‘Silla’ (1713), with the original Italian words ‘Mi brilla nel seno’ written beneath the basso continuo part. Incomplete: lacking the final page.
7. ff. 12-13v. Handel: ‘Non è si vago e bello’, aria from ‘Giulio Cesare in Egitto’ (1723). Incomplete: lacking the first page. Transposed to B flat major.
8. f. 13v. The first two bars of a piece for keyboard in D major.
9. ff. 14v-16. [Attilio Ariosti]: ‘Con forza ascosa’, aria from ‘Vespasiano’ (1724).
10. f. 16. ‘Castle minuet’ in G major, for keyboard.
11. ff. 16v-19. Handel: ‘Se risolve [recte risolvi] out of Floridante’ (1721).
12. ff. 19v-21. ‘Whilst the Town &c’, song. The words of the second verse are written on f. 21.
