ITALIAN ARIAS; 1780s. Copies. Score of the vocal and keyboard parts only. Though the keyboard part usually includes a reduction of some of the upper parts, the chief melodic line is often missing, suggesting that the manuscript was originally accompanied by instrumental parts. Written in several different hands, on several different papers, ruled with eight, ten or twelve staves to the page, some of them heavily cropped.
ff. i + 41. 219 x 292mm. Half-leather on marbled boards, with ornate red leather gilt-stamped title label reading ‘Haydn’s Ballads, Gentle Shepherd &c’, which according to a note on f. i suggests that two printed items, Haydn’s A Second Sett of Twelve Ballads (Preston [1787]) and Thomas Linley’s The Overture, Songs & Duetts in the Pastoral Opera of the Gentle Shepherd (Printed for S. A. & P. Thompson, [1781]) had previously been bound before the manuscript items in the volume.
1. ff. 1-4. [Johann Christian Bach]: ‘Rondeau’, for soprano (words anonymous). Recitative, beginning ‘Ebben si vada, Trionfi la ragione’, and aria, beginning ‘Io ti lascio, e questo addio’. No. LG2 in E. Warburton, The Collected Works of Johann Christian Bach, xlviii/1, Thematic Catalogue (New York, 1999). The aria was originally composed by Michele Mortellari with a different recitative, and was reorchestrated by Bach with a new recitative. It was subsequently incorporated into William Shield’s The Flitch of Bacon. For another copy of the score, see Add. 31578. Published as The Favorite Rondeau (Tenducci, [1778]) and Rondeau chanté au Grand concert de Londre par M. Tenducci en 1778 (Paris: Mme Le Marchand, [1778]).
2. ff. 5-6. Aria, beginning ‘Rasserena il vago ciglio’, for soprano.
3. f. 7. Song, beginning ‘In miry dreams soft fancy flies’, for soprano.
4. ff. 8-11v. [Giovanni Francesco de Maja]: Aria, beginning ‘Tornò in [recte la] mia speranza nel seno’ (words, Pietro Metastasio).
5. ff. 12-13. [Antonio Sacchini]: ‘Song in Mithridate’, beginning ‘Adorata mia speranza’ (words, Apostolo Zeno). Score published in The Favourite Songs in the Opera Mitridate (R. Bremner, [1781]).
6. ff. 13v-14v. Sacchini: ‘Song in Mithridate’, beginning ‘Io parto ben mio’ (words, Apostolo Zeno). Score published in The Favourite Songs in the Opera Mitridate (R. Bremner, [1781]).
7. ff. 15-16v. [Sacchini]: ‘Song in Rinaldo’. Recitative beginning ‘Quel suono che m’alletta onde vien’, and aria, beginning ‘Torna pure al caro bene’. Score published in The Favourite Songs in the Opera Rinaldo (R. Bremner, [1780]).
