CARL MARIA VON WEBER: ‘Hymne, "In seiner Ordnung schafft der Herr"’, op.36, for soprano, alto, tenor and bass soloists, four-part chorus and orchestra (words, Friedrich Rochlitz); 1825. Score. Copy, in ink, with annotations in pencil. The words are not written into the score. A copy made for Sir George Smart from the score in the possession of the publisher Adolph Martin Schlesinger: the title page includes a note in Schlesinger’s hand, reading: ‘laut Uebereinkunft mit dem Herrn Professor Smart darf von der Abschrift dieser Partitur keine Copie gemacht werden, und ist diese Abschrift nur zum Gebrauch für Concerte in Grossbritanien [the words ‘der Phil-Harmonischen Gesellschaft in London’ are here deleted]. Das Eigenthum dieser Partitur gehört der Schlesingerschen Buch & Musik-handlung in Berlin, Ad. Mt. Schlesinger.’ Smart had ordered the copy to be made on 17 October 1825, and explains in his diary entry for 21 October that Schlesinger ‘had put on the title that I was only to let the Philharmonic have it performed. I explained that it was not for the Philharmonic but for my own use at concerts, etc., he then altered the conditions of sale’ (see Leaves from the Journals of Sir George Smart, ed. H. B. & C. L. E. Cox (1907), p. 187). Weber had four copies made from his autograph, which is now Mus. ms. autogr. C. M. v. Weber WFN 8 (1) in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. The present whereabouts of the copy made for Schlesinger are unknown; it was sold by Henrici of Berlin in 1922 (catalogue 80, no. 607). Signed by Smart on f. 1; the cover also bears the signature of G. R. Sinclair, and the spine is stamped with the name ‘W. Laidlaw L[iver]pool’. Watermark of ‘I A U Wolfeg’. Piano score published Berlin: In der Schlesingerschen Buch- und Musikhandlung, [1817].
