Dimensions: 202 x 140 (text space: ff. 1r-122v: 125 x 80 mm; ff. 123r-149v: 155 x 113 mm).
Foliation: ff. v + 149. Previous flyleaves from a 12th-century biblical commentary on Zacharias now detached and mounted in Additional MS 38651 as ff. 37-44 (ff. 37-40 were ff. 1*-8* in the present manuscript, ff. 41-44 were ff. 150-157).
Collation: i-xiv8 and xv10 (ff. 1r-122v: with quire numerical signatures on last versos), xvi8, xvii10-1 (tenth excised), xviii8, xix2.
Layout: ff. 1r-122v: pricked and ruled in lead point (double vertical bounding lines) for single columns of 25 lines, text above top line; ff. 123r-149v: pricked and ruled in lead point and ink (single vertical bounding lines) for double columns of 41-43 lines, text above top line.
Script: ff. 1r-122v: Protogothic; ff. 123r-149v: Gothic.

Part 1: ff 1r-122v:
Numerous inscriptions in a fourteenth-century hand (e.g., ff. 50r, 66r, 76r, 86r, 88r, 92r, 97v, 105r, 117r, 122v), some with Surrey place names (ff. 66r, 92r, and 97v), many with drafts of a grant of land and mostly mentioning the name Thomas Denmars (unidentified).
Ownership inscription?, effaced (f. 122v).
Part 2: ff. 123r-149v
'Merton.', inscribed in a 13th or 14th-century hand, f. 123.
Parts 1 and 2: Sir Simonds d'Ewes (b.1602, d. 1650), 1st baronet, diarist, antiquary, and friend of Sir Robert Cotton (see Wright 1972): his inventory, Additional MS 22918: ms 103.
Sir Simonds D’Ewes (d. 1722), 3rd baronet and grandson of the former: inherited and later sold the D’Ewes library to Robert Harley on 4 October 1705 for £450 (see Watson 1966).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta, née Cavendish Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
