Autograph. Written in ink on the recto of a single leaf; staves drawn freehand by Beethoven. The music on five single staves with the text beneath. Dated ‘Wien am / 3ten März / 1815’ at the foot, with the signed dedication ‘Mögten sie doch lieber Spohr / überall, wo sie wahre Kunst und / wahre Künstler finden, gerne / meiner gedenken / ihres / freundes / ludwig wan Beethoven’. A bar in the third voice omitted by Beethoven has been inserted by Spohr. ‘Beethoven’ added in pencil on the verso.
Spohr describes in his Autobiography how Beethoven drew the lines for this album leaf ‘without the aid of a ruler’, and how he himself supplied the notes wanting in the third voice. WoO 163 is a separate three-part canon to the same text composed in 1813.
