1-7 November 1871. Written in dark brown ink on systems of two staves, the two parts on facing pages. Autograph fair copy. Music occupies ff. 2v-13r. Opening tempo direction ‘Langsam’. Title-page (f. 2r): ‘Nachklang einer Sylvesternacht / mit Prozessionslied, Bauerntanz und Mitternachtsglocke / componiert / von / Friedrich Nietzsche / (1-7 November 1871)’. With a very small number of corrections and performance annotations in pencil.
This manuscript seems not to have been known to the editor of Der musikalische Nachlass. There are a small number of textual variants between it and the published edition. The last word of the title in the Weimar autograph is ‘Glockengeläut’, rather than as in Zweig MS 71.
