B. Letters from the conductor Wilhelm Ganz (b.1833, d.1914) to his brother Eduard (Königliche Kammermusikus in Berlin), also to his father, the composer Adolf Ganz, and his sister Caecilie; 1852-4. German. Autograph, often with postscripts in the hands of Adolf, Caecilie and his brother Karl Ganz. With a photograph, presumably of the Ganz family, and newspaper cuttings (ff. 49, 50-3). The letters describe, amongst other things, the family’s travels in Britain and concert-giving in London, and complement the information in Ganz’s published Memories of a Musician (1913). See also G. Wagner, Die Musikerfamilie Ganz aus Weissenau (Mainz, 1974). Purchased at Sotheby’s, 16 May 1997 (lot 177).
