F. Letters from Sir Arthur Sullivan to the singer Sybil Seligman; 1896-1900. Autograph. The letters chart the friendships between Sullivan and Seligman, her younger sister Violet Beddington and the singer Paolo Tosti. With one letter to Seligman from Mary Frances Ronalds and two (one incomplete) from J. F. Bland (ff. 126-7, 128-9). The tale of Sullivan’s love for Violet Beddington is the basis of part of her future husband Sydney Schiff’s novel Myrtle (1925; written under the nom de plume of Stephen Hudson). Purchased at Sotheby’s, 21 May 1999 (lot 309).
