B. Two songs from ‘Along the Field’, settings of poems by A. E. Housman for voice and violin; n.d. [1927]. Copies, in ink. The songs, ‘The Soldier’ (A Shropshire Lad, xxii) and ‘Good Bye’ (A Shropshire Lad, v), formed part of the original set of nine songs, of which seven were first performed on 27 October 1927. ‘The Soldier’ was discarded prior to publication, and the autograph apparently does not survive. For autograph scores of six other songs in the set, see Add. 50481, ff. 62-8. ‘Good Bye’ published in Along the Field: Eight Housman Songs for Voice and Violin (Oxford University Press, [1954]). See Kennedy, pp. 116-17. Formerly belonged to Sir Steuart Wilson. Presented by Michael Hurd, Esq., 14 June 2000.
