1. ff. 1-23. String quartet; [1935]. Sketches (f. 1) and draft score, in pencil. With part of a song for voice and piano written in ink on f. 1v, setting the words ‘Let no light word your silence mar...’.

2. ff. 24-7. ‘Theme and four studies’, for piano; circa 1940. Draft of the first study, in pencil. Published 1973.

3. ff. 28-52. String quartet no.3; [1965]. Sketches (ff. 28-35), draft short score (ff. 36-48) and incomplete score (ff. 49-52), all in pencil. Commissioned by Harlow Arts Council. Published 1966.

4. ff. 53-9. Suite for flute, viola and harp; [1968]. Draft scores, in pencil, of the first movement and portions of the third movement. Published 1970.

5. ff. 60-70. Quartet for oboe, violin, viola and ’cello [no.2]; [1970]. Series chart, sketch and draft short score, lacking the final 23 bars. Commissioned by the City Music Society. Published 1972.

6. ff. 71-7. Quintet for piano, clarinet, horn, violin and ’cello; [1970]. Incomplete draft short score in pencil, with a copyist’s score of the first bar only, also in pencil. Commissioned by the Gulbenkian Foundation for the Music Group of London. Published 1972.

7. ff. 78-80. ‘Elegy’, for guitar; 1971. A suggested completion by Gerard Schurmann. Bars 129-172 only. Photocopy of a score in Schurmann’s hand. The Elegy was published with a facsimile of the composer’s sketches for the final section and an alternative completion by Julian Bream, 1975. The autograph score and sketches are in the Rawsthorne Archive.
