1. ff. 1-8v. ‘Aubade’ (words, Shakespeare and Thomas Heywood, first words ‘Hark, hark the lark at heaven’s gate sings’ and ‘Pack, clouds, away’) for soprano, two violins and harpsichord; 1951. Score. Dedicated to Maria Piccaver. Followed by an excerpt as incidental music to Cymbeline.
2. ff. 10-11v. ‘The Cherry Tree’, song (words, A. E. Housman) for voice and piano; 1944, revised 1973. Ink score of revised version. Dedicated to ‘P. D. W.’.
3. ff. 12-37r. ‘Ode to Evening’, cantata (words, William Collins, beginning ‘If aught of oaten stop or pastoral song’) for high voice, two clarinets and piano; 1948, revised 1980. Score and arrangement for voice and piano, both of the later version. Dedicated to Esther Darlington.
4. ff. 38-40v. ‘Echoes’, song (words, Thomas Moore) for baritone and piano; 1950, rewritten 1976, final revision 1979. Ink score of final version. Dedicated to Ian and Betty Glennie.
