The Sowerbutts collection of letters of musicians; 1662, 1795 – 1952. 1,2. Letters of English and foreign musicians, some of the later items written to H. H. or J. A. Sowerbutts. Arranged in two volumes, each containing a separate alphabetical sequence. Vol. 1 includes single letters of Berlioz, Debussy and Mendelssohn. The item of 1662 (in vol. 2) is a warrant, signed by the Earl of Southampton, Lord Treasurer, for payment of £40 per annum to John Smith, one of the King's musicians for the viols; – 3. Letters of musicians written to William Hawes, composer, vicar choral of St Paul's Cathedral (d.1846) and to his daughter, the singer Maria Billington Hawes (d.1886). Arranged alphabetically by writers, who include Sir Henry Bishop, Sir George Smart and Samuel Wesley.
