The libretto was originally called ‘Fernando Re di Castiglia’, and the action took place at Coimbra. The first two acts were set to this book, but the names were then changed. The opera became ‘Sosarme Re di Media’, the action laid at ‘Sardi’, Fernando became ‘Sosarme; Alfonso – Argone; Sancio – Melo; Isabella – Erenice; Dionisio – Haliate; and Elvida – Elmira. (Altomaro is in both version). All these changes, with corresponding alterations in the words, are in Handel’s writing in the MS. ff. 25v, 36v, 45 and 89 are ruled with staves but otherwise blank. Points of note:
1. f. 11. Act I, sc. 3. Version A (H-G., p. 13).
2. f. 11v. At the end of Elmira’s recitative (H-G., p. 14) a passage is crossed out, followed by the air (S.) ‘Vola l’augello’ (ff. 11v-13), marked: ‘Si leva quest’aria’ (H-G., p. 80).
3. f. 24. Sc. 8. A long scene of recitatives is crossed out, followed on f. 25 by the recitative in H-G., p. 27.
4. f. 26. ‘La turba adulatrice’. (H-G., p. 28, Version A). The passages in dotted brackets (H-G., pp. 30, 31) are in the MS.
5. ff. 30-32. Sc. 10. The recitatives have been considerably altered, but practically are those in H-G., p. 35, Versions A, including the passages in dotted brackets.
6. f. 36. ‘Fine dell’Atto 1’.
7. f. 66. Act II, sc. 13. ‘In mille dolci’. The opening of another setting has been crossed out.
8. f. 67v. Sc. 14. At the end of the recitative (H-G., p. 80): ‘Segue l’Aria Vola l’augel e poi Fine dell’Atto 2do’.
9. f. 80v. Act III, sc. 12. ‘Scena 12 Erenice va alla volta d’Argone e Melo a quella di Haliate e restano ambidue disgraziamente feriti, la madre dal figlio e Melo dal Padre’. (Directions omitted in H-G., p. 100).
10. f. 88v. ‘Fine dell’Opera. G. F. Handel. A li 4 di Febraro. 1732’. (Above ‘Febraro’: ‘Venerdi’ last letter changed from ‘y’ to ‘i’).
