- Title:
- George Frideric Handel: Cantatas V. Autograph
- Scope & Content:
-
Cantatas with instrumental accompaniments. Between ff. 71 and 72 is a single leaf, ruled with staves but otherwise blank, foliated 71a; ff. 30v, 38v, 58v are ruled with staves but otherwise blank. f. i is an inserted leaf with a note in the hand of F. Nicolai.
1. ff. 1-30. ‘Arresta il passo’ ("Aminta e Fillide", cantata a due con stromenti HWV 83) (H-G. LII a, p. 21). The MS is in the handwriting of Handel’s Italian period, but on f. 3v ‘1 April 1737’ is written in pencil in his later hand. Author of the text unknown.
2. ff. 31-64v. An incomplete Cantata (Clori, Tirsi e Filene: "Cor fedele in vano speri", cantata a tre con stromenti HWV 96) (H-G. LII b, p. 99), beginning ‘[a-]mar ma poi se’l voglio’ [‘Conosco che mi piaci’ is omitted]. f. 34v: The page ends: ‘empia spergiura’ (H-G., p. 104). This is the last leaf of the folding marked (on f. 31) ‘4’. The next page (f. 35) is the first page of the next folding, marked ‘5’. So there is no break in the composition here, as stated in H-G. f. 53: Over the voice part to H-G., p. 126, line 5, bars 5-8, is written: ‘tinta di Porpora guancia ch’e florida’. f. 62: At the end of ‘Senza occhi’ (H-G., p. 137): ‘Il Fine’. ff. 62v-64v. ‘Vivere e non amare’ (H-G., p. 138). A different setting of the words in Aci, Galatea e Polifemo (H-G. LIII, p. 80).
3. ff. 65-71v. ‘Chi ben ama’. Incomplete Cantata (possibly part of ‘Arresta il passo’, see above, ff. 1-30v) (H-G. LII b, p. 140). Author of the text unknown.
4. ff. 72-75v. ‘Ah! che troppo ineguali’. Recitative and air (HWV 230) (H-G. LII b, p. 148). Author of the text unknown.
