According to Barclay Squire, the whole MS. has been foliated in pencil by Handel, but this attribution is questioned by Winton Dean, Handel’s Dramatic Oratorios and Masques, London, 1959, p. 510. f. 43v is ruled with staves but otherwise blank.
Points of note:
1. f. 1. ‘Introduzione a tempo di Overture’.
2. f. 1v. (End of Introduction). ‘Segue il Coro, ye Sons of Israel’ (crossed out in pencil). ‘the Fugue of Salomon [musical notes, H-G., p. 2] and the Courante’ (in pencil).
3. f. 2. (Bottom of page). ’19 July 1747’. [Here is the astrological symbol for Monday] angefangen’.
4. f. 33. ‘Hark! ‘tis the linnet’. (H-G., p. 63).
5. f. 36v. A shorter version of ‘Hark! ’tis the linnet’ (crossed out in pencil).
6. f. 43. (End of Act I). ’30 July. 1747’.
7. f. 55v. ‘Let all the seed of Abrah’m now prepare’ (H-G., p. 105). Headed: ‘The Passover’.
8. f. 75. End of Joshua’s recitative (H-G., p. 141): ‘Flourish of Warlike Instruments’. (See Preface to H-G.).
9. f. 75v. ‘Flourish repeated’. (End of Caleb’s recitative, H-G., p. 145).
10. f. 79. (End of Act II). ‘Fine della parte 2da agost 8 [here is the astrological symbol for Saturday]. 1747’.
11. f. 98. ‘See the godlike youth’. The movement is a duet, to be sung by ‘Sgra Cassarini’ and ‘Sigra Strada’ [although the MS. reads Galli, see also Winton Dean, Handel’s Dramatic Oratorios and Masques, London, 1959, p. 505]. ‘Chorus of Virgins’ (as in H-G., p. 185) is not in the MS.
12. f. 98v. (H-G., p. 186). ‘Chorus. Drum ad libitum the second time Drum warbling’.
13. f. 104v. ‘S.D.G. G. F. Handel London Agost 18 1747. ♂ [Tuesday]. Agost 19 [here is the astrological symbol for Wednesday] 1747 völlig geendiget’.
