- Title:
- George Frideric Handel: Messiah, HWV 56. Autograph manuscript
- Scope & Content:
-
Handel's working compositional manuscript of his oratorio Messiah, in which he set words by Charles Jennens after texts from the Bible. According to the dates added by Handel to the manuscript, the music was largely written between 22 August and 14 September 1741. There are many corrections and amendments in the score, made both while Handel was composing the work and before and after the first performance.
Some points of note:
1. f. 16. A cut is marked in pencil at the beginning of the second line. No ending is marked for the cut.
2. f. 21. This leaf is not in Handel’s writing. It has been copied to replace the large blots on f. 22 and afterwards pasted down on f. 22.
3. f. 90. The last bar of line 2 is crossed out in pencil.
4. f. 99v. The words at the bottom of the page are: ‘Da capo dal Seg[no] il Ritornello e si scriva’.
5. ff. 100-106. Hallelujah chorus.
6. f. 133. Line six. Some illegible pencil writings is in the MS. under the words ‘How beautiful…that’. [‘Mrs Savage’]
7. f. 138v. ‘Mr Beard’ is crossed out in pencil.
