The autograph has the divisions into Acts and Scenes, as in the Libretto (H-G., pp. 3-11), with some additional directions. f. 57v is ruled with staves but otherwise blank.
Points of note:
1. f. 16v. ‘Scena 3 Athalia, Chorus of Attendants to them Abner and Mathan’. ‘Athalia starting out of a slumber’. ‘What scenes of horror’ (H-G., p. 52).
2. f. 22v. At the end of ‘softest sounds’: ‘Scene ye 4 Joad, Josabeth, Chorus and to them Abner’. The words of the recitatives (‘My Josabeth…cup of woe’) (H-G., p. 6) are written, without music, and crossed out in ink.
3. f. 23. ‘Swift to the Temple’ (H-G., p. 77).
4. f. 23v. Scene 4’, etc. ‘My Josabeth’, etc. (H-G., p. 77).
5. f. 26. The last chorus of Act I (H-G., p. 86). ‘Allelujah’ or ‘Alleluja’ – so spelt throughout. From ‘As pants the hart’ (H-G. XXXIV, No. 6B).
6. f.28v. ‘Fine della Parte Prima’
7. f. 29. ‘Part 2 Scene 1’. ‘The Temple’ (H-G., Libretto, p. 6) is not in the MS. The bass Montagnana is mentioned.
8. f. 37v. At the end of ‘Through the land’: ‘Si puo replicare il coro precedente dal segno N B’ crossed out in ink.
9. f. 45. ‘The clouded scene’. Against the voice parts (H-G., p.158, line 1, bar 4) the following names are written: ‘Sgra Strada C 1’, ‘the boy’ (crossed out in ink) ‘Joas C 2’, ‘Mrs Wright C 3’.
10. f. 47v. ‘Fine della Parte 2da’.
11. f. 55v. At the end of H-G., p. 203: ‘Si ripete il Coro nella Parte 2 dal segno ’. ‘Fine dell’Oratorio S.D.G. G F Handel London June ye 7. 1733’.
12. f. 56. An ending of the chorus ‘Oh Judah, boast’ modulating to D minor 2/4 ‘Alleluja’. It is not clear for what this was intended.
13. f. 56v. Allegro ‘doppo la Sinfonia’. In G major, 12/8, for Oboes, Violins, Viola and Basses. The last movement for the Overture to Parnasso in Festa (H-G. LIV, p. 5).
