- Title:
- George Frideric Handel: Israel in Egypt (oratorio on a libretto by unknown author after texts from the Bible), HWV 54. Autograph
- Scope & Content:
-
Between ff. 31 and 32 is a single leaf, ruled with staves but otherwise blank, foliated 31a; f. 73v is ruled with staves but otherwise blank.
Points of note:
1. f. 1. ‘Act ye 2’. ’15 Octobr 1738’. The words of the recitative ‘Now there arose’ (H-G., p. 1) are written, with the Tenor clefs for the voice part, but no notes, and only the first note (F) of the Continuo. A first setting of ‘And the children of Israel sigh’d’ follows, crossed out in ink until the last four staves of the next page.
2. f. 1v. Below the cancelled setting of ‘And the children of Israel’ is a recitative for Tenor with figured bass. ‘Rigour and the children of Israel’, etc., marked ‘NB’.
3. f. 2. The first setting of ‘And the children of Israel sigh’d’ is continued until the end of f. 3v (not crossed out).
4. f. 4. ‘Part ye 2 of Exodus’. ‘Now there arose’, recitative (H-G., p. 1). At the end ‘NB’ (referring to the recitative on f. 1v). ‘And the children of Israel sigh’d’ (H-G., p. 1) follows.
5. f. 4v. The MS. ends at the end of H-G., p. 4, bar 3.
6. f. 5. The MS. begins at the beginning of H-G., p. 12, bar 4. A few of the words in the voice part have been written by a copyist.
7. f.6. Continuation of the earlier version of ‘And the children of Israel’, only partly written and all crossed out in ink. Below it is a continuation of the recitative on f. 1v, ‘Then sent He Moses’ (H-G., p. 17).
8. f. 8. ‘Their land brought forth frogs’ (H-G., p. 23). ‘Mr. Savage’ (in pencil).
9. f. 9. ‘He spake the word’ (H-G., p. 27). ‘Andante Larghetto e Pomposo’.
10. f. 12v. Handel writes always: ‘devour’d the fruit of their ground’ (H-G., pp. 38, 39).
11. ff. 13-17. Hailstone chorus. A few of the words have been written by a copyist.
12. f. 17v. ‘He sent a thick darkness’ (H-G., p. 55).
13. f. 18v. ‘He smote all the first born’ (H-G., p. 58). A few of the words are written by a copyist.
14. f. 23v. At the top of ‘Egypt was glad’: ‘Trough [sic] the Land Sa Frances’, ‘N 1’ (in pencil).
15. f. 29v. At the end of ‘But the waters overwhelmed’(H-G., p. 108): ‘N 2 Angelic Splendor ex B Sa Frances’ (in pencil).
16. f. 31v. End of ‘And believed the Lord’ (H-G., p. 114): ‘Fine della Parte 2da d’Exodus’ ‘Octobr 20. 1738’. ‘Octobr 28’.
17. f. 32. ‘Moses Song. Exodus. Chap. 15’. ‘angefangen Oct. 1. 1738’ ‘Introitus.’ (H-G., p. 115). Some of the words are written by a copyist.
18. f. 33. ‘I will sing unto the Lord’ (H-G., p. 119). Marked ‘Andante’ both at the top and the bottom of the page, but at the top crossed out and ‘A tempo giusto’ substituted.
19. f. 39. ‘The Lord is my strenght’ (H-G., p. 138). ‘Frances.’ and illegible words in (pencil).
20. f. 40. ‘He is my God’ (H-G., p. 143). Some words written by a copyist.
21. f. 42v. ‘The Lord is a man of war’ (H-G., p. 153). ‘Mr Wals Mr Reinhold’ (in pencil).
22. f. 51v. Above the Adagio (H-G., p. 183): ‘N 3 Cor fedele ex G Sa Francesina Recit Offre un Core devoto Aria la speranza la Costanza’ (in pencil).
23. f. 58. ‘The enemy said’ (H-G., p. 208): ‘Mr Beard’ (in pencil).
24. f. 59. ‘Thou didst blow’ (H-G., p. 210): ‘S. Frances.’ (in pencil).
25. ff. 60-61. ‘Who is like unto Thee’. Bars 2-5 on p. 216 of H-G. are not in the MS. A pencil mark evidently points to the omission. The pause said in the preface to H-G. to be over the last E in the Continuo is not in the MS.
26. ff. 61v-62. ‘Thou in Thy mercy’ (H-G., p. 221): ‘Mr Bird and Robinsons Boy’ (in pencil).
27. f. 62v. At the end of ‘Thou in Thy mercy’: ‘N 4 la speranza la costanza Sa Frances’ (in pencil).
28. f. 66v. ‘The people shall hear’. The page ends at the end of bar 4 of p. 238 of H-G. Below is written: ‘Segue, by the greatness of thy arm’, with the first four notes of the Continuo.
29. f. 67. Begins at bar 5 of H-G., p. 239.
30. f. 70v. ‘Thou shalt bring them in’ (H-G., p. 250): ‘Mr Savage’ (in pencil).
31. f. 73. ‘Sing ye to the Lord’. The MS. ends at the end of H-G., p. 261, bar 3. ‘Repetatr Chorus sub litera A for He hath triumphed gloriou[sly]’. ‘Fine. Octobr 11. 1738. den 1 Novembr völlig geendiget’.
