- George Frideric Handel: Coronation Anthems for King George II and Queen Caroline, HWV 258-261. Autograph
- Scope & Content:
-
Between ff. 17 and 18 is a single leaf, ruled with staves but otherwise blank, foliated 17a; ff. 10v and 50v are ruled with staves but otherwise blank.
1. ff. 1-10v. ‘Anthem. 1 Kings 1. 48.’ ‘Zadok the Priest’. (HWV 258) f. 2v: At the entry of the voices (H-G., p. 6) the 1st Treble line has the words: ‘Blessed are all they that fear the Lord’, written by a copyst. Handel has pencilled these words above ‘Zadok the Priest and Nathan the Prophet annointed [sic] Salomon [sic] King’ in the Bass voice part. No words are given to the other voices. The pencilled passages in this anthem were made when it was used for the last chorus of Esther. f. 3v: ‘And all the people rejoic’d’. Marked ‘out’ in pencil. f. 4v: The last page of the movement is crossed out in pencil. f. 5: ‘God save the King’ (H-G., p. 13). Marked ‘stat’, in pencil.
2. ff. 11-17v. ‘Let thy hand be strengthened’. Psalm 89, vv. 13-14 (HWV 259) (H-G., p. 113). f. 11: The Introduction (down to H-G., p. 115, line 1, end of bar 4) is in a copyst’s hand. f. 12. Throughout the movement ‘deeds be glorious and thy hand victorious’ are written as alternative words to ‘hand be strengthened and thy right hand be exalted’. The altered words in this anthem were made when it was used in Deborah (H-G. XXIX). f.12: Against the Bass voice part at the beginning of the first number: ‘N.B. Wh. et Bell’. At bar 2, line 2, p. 115 of H-G.: ‘tutti Bassi’ against the Bass voice part and ‘Hautb. colla parte’ at the Treble entry in the third beat of the preceding bar. f. 14: ‘Let justice and judgement’ (H-G., p. 121). ‘Despair all around them Shall swiftly confound them, Whilst transports of joy Our praise shall employ’: alternative words used in Deborah.
3. ff. 18-35v. ‘Ψ 21. v. 1 et v. 3’. ‘The King shall rejoice’ (HWV 260) (H-G., p. 27). f. 18: The seven lower lines of the score have the following: ‘C[anto]. 12’; ‘H[ughes]. et 6’; ‘Freem[an]. et 6’; ‘Church et 6’; ‘Wheely et 6’; ‘Gates et 6’; ‘Organ et 2 Viol’. f. 19: Alternative words (H-G., p. 31): ‘The great King of Kings Will aid us to-day, His praises let all With transport display’. Alterations made when the chorus was used for Deborah. f. 26: ‘Glory and worship’, (H-G., p. 49). Marked: ‘Non tanto allegro a tempo giusto’. The MS. reads ‘And worship’ (not ‘great worship’), with a crochet on the last beat of bar 4 in all parts. f. 26v: ‘Thou hast prevented him’. ‘N.B. Littera A’ at the top of the page.
4. ff. 36-50v. ‘Ψ 45 v. 1, 10, 12. Ψ 49 v. 23’. ‘My heart is inditing’ (HWV 261) (H-G., p. 71). f. 36v: The Bass soli (H-G., p. 72) are marked: ‘Mr. Wheely, Mr. Bell’; the Alto: ‘Mr Hughs, Mr. Lee’. f. 37: The entry of the Treble (H-G., p. 74) is marked ‘all’. f. 37v: Alto entry (H-G., p. 76, line 1, bar 2) marked: ‘H.L.’. Bass entry in the next bar: ‘W. B.’. f. 38: Bass 2 (H-G., p. 77) marked ‘all’. f. 40: ‘Kings’ daughters’ (H-G., p. 83). ‘Solo’ is not in the MS. but the Bass entry (p. 84) is marked ‘Tutti’. f. 42v: ‘Upon thy right hand’. Bass part (H-G., p. 91, line 1) is marked ‘Mr. W. & B.’; ‘And the King shall have pleasure’ (H-G., p. 91, line 2) is marked: ‘All the Basses’.
