Royal Music Collection. Coperario (Giovanni). Instrumental Fantasias; early 17th century. A book of 23 numbered sets of instrumental pieces, each consisting of a fantasia, almaine and galliard. Nos. 1-15 are for a keyboard instrument, either organ or virginal, and above no. 16 is written ‘Heare beginneth for 2 treble viollins, ye base violl. & ye organ’; but the almaine and galliard of no. 16 and nos. 17-23 are all in very simple 2-part counterpoint, probably incomplete. In the same hand throughout. [Musica Britannica 46. D. Pinto, in M.B. 60 p.xvi, says ‘entirely in the youthful hand of [William] Lawes, and dating from the mid-1620s’. Described as the companion volume to Oxford, Christ Church, Music MSS 732-735 in The Viola da Gamba Society Index of Manuscripts containing Consort Music (Aldershot, 2001), pp. 200-4; but see D. Pinto in Music & Letters 84 (2003), p. 86, who suggests that the book may rather be part of a set commissioned by royal warrant from John Woodington in February 1634/5. On the binding, see M. M. Foot, ‘Some Bindings for Charles I’, in Studies in the History of Bookbinding (Aldershot, 1999).]
