PETTY PAPERS. VOL. I. General correspondence of Sir William Petty; 1649-1687. Including (f. ii) a list of contents by the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne, labels by James Matthews (ff. iii, 167), and annotations throughout by both. For an item by item list, see Slatter, 'Report', I, pp. 44-62, and for individual correspondents, see the index to the present catalogue. Formerly Bowood Vol. 6 (James Matthews' Vol. 12).
ff. iv + 309. Mounted on guards and bound, not always in accurate chronological order, in brown leather, gilt-ruled and blind-stamped, 19th cent. 385 x 270mm.
Contents:
1. ff. 1-101v, 108, 114, 118-123v. Letters from Petty to his cousin and agent in Ireland, John Petty; 1649, 1657-1661. Partly in cypher. These are original letters, evidently returned to the writer after John Petty's death in 1671. For John Petty's letterbook during the last months of his life, see Add. 72859 below.
2. ff. 102-310. Other correspondence; 1662-1687. Partly drafts. The largest group of incoming letters is from the mathematician, Robert Wood, M.D., 1671-1681; some of Petty's letters to him are entered in his letterbook, Add. 72858 below. Other correspondents include Sir Robert Moray, John Graunt, Viscount Brouncker, John Aubrey, Andrew Marvell, Edmund Waller, Sir Peter Pett, Henry Oldenburg, William Penn and William Molyneux. For transcripts of further letters from some of the above correspondents concerning Petty's shipping projects, see Add. 72894 and 72895 below. Some of Petty's correspondence in other collections and in print is discussed in Economic Writings, ed. Hull pp. lvi-lvii; see also his letters to John Aubrey, 1678-1685, in Egerton MS 2231, ff. 90-95.
