PETTY PAPERS. VOL. II. Letters from Sir Robert Southwell to Petty, 1674-1687, and his wife, 1679-1688, with a few drafts or copies of Petty's replies, two original letters (ff. 210-214) from Lady Petty to Southwell, 1687, 1688, which appear to have been added to the volume after binding in the 19th century, and a number of related or enclosed papers listed below, whose exact connection with the adjacent letters is not always clear, although they must have been amongst the numerous writings exchanged between the two; 1674-1688. With (f. ii) a label by James Matthews ('Sir Wm Petty's Papers consisting Private Concerns. Letters of Sir Robert Southwell ...'), and pencilled annotations throughout by the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne. The first three letters from Southwell, dated 14 April, 14 Nov., 31 Dec. 1674, two letters dated 26, 28 Sept. 1687, and the correspondence between Southwell and Lady Petty are not printed in the Petty-Southwell Correspondence. 3. ff. 78-81. Essay, 'Of Ridicule'; 1686. In the hand of Thomas Dance. Printed in Petty Papers, II, pp. 193-198.
4. ff. 150-153v. Paper endorsed 'M. Pascalls thoughts of the varietye of Witt', with comments by Petty headed, 'As to Monsr Paschalls paper ...'; 1685. Autograph and in the hand of an amanuensis. There is another version of the former in Add. 72898, f. 74, and another copy of the latter in Add. 72853, ff. 39-40, below.
