PETTY PAPERS. VOL. IX. Letterbook, containing copies, in the hands of several amanuenses, of Petty's letters to various correspondents, including his Irish agents, John Rutter and Thomas Waller (whose letterbooks are Add. 72860-72862 below); also including some personal letters to Lady Petty, John Graunt, Dr Robert Wood and others; 2 April 1672-20 Nov. 1675. The volume was first used as an entry-book for orders by Henry Cromwell as Lord Deputy of Ireland, 1657-1659 (ff. 4-14), and then for memoranda concerning tenants and rents received from Petty's Ballyboy estate in Ireland (ff. 14v-21v); further estate accounts occur at ff. 64-70. At the end (ff. 234-236) are an account with Sir George Carteret, 1668, of which some leaves are damaged, a contemporary index to the letters (ff. 229-232), and a list of subjects compiled by the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne (f. 228) apparently in connection with his book Glanerought and the Petty-Fitzmaurices. Formerly lot 816 at the Phillipps sale at Sotheby's, 27 April 1911. Petty's other letterbooks from the same sequence, covering the years 1666-1683 (lot 813), were bought by Sir William Osler and are now in the Osler Library, McGill University, Montreal; some extracts from them made for William, Earl of Kerry (d. 1836), while they were still in the Phillipps collection, are in Add. 72905, ff. 63-76, and a few passages have been printed in Fitzmaurice's Life. For a microfilm, see M 2258. According to a note by 6th Marquess of Lansdowne in Add. 72905, f. 62, a third volume of these letterbooks covering the years 1677 to 1679, is recorded as having been in the 'Irish Public Record Office (Customs House building)' in 1834; this was apparently destroyed in 1922. For an item by item list of contents of the present volume, see Slatter, 'Report', I, pp. 174-199, and for the individual addressees, see the index to the present catalogue. Formerly Bowood Vol. 19.
Paper; ff. i + 236. Original vellum binding, with modern repairs. 285 x 195mm.
