PETTY PAPERS. VOL. XIX (ff. 138). 'Down Survey', Volume 'B', containing surveys of the province of Leinster; 1655-[1656]. Leinster comprises the counties of Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, King's County (Offaly), Longford, Louth, Meath, Queen's County (Leix), Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow. The present volume contains maps of the counties of Wexford, Carlow and Kilkenny; the following volume (72869) contains those of Kildare, King's and Queen's Counties; the volume containing the remaining surveys of Dublin, Longford and Meath is now missing, as indicated above, but see 72872, ff. 255-261, below for the barony of Abbeyshrule, co. Longford, and 72873 A below for the barony of Duleek, co. Meath. Inserted on modern guards preceding the terriers and maps are (ff. iii-iv) two single sheet printed items: an order by the Lord Deputy, Henry Cromwell, for assistance to Petty in manpower, transport, etc., 12 Feb. 1654/5; Instructions for Surveying and admeasuring forfeited, and other the Common-wealths Lands in Ireland (Dublin 1654/5); (f. v) a receipt by Matthew Franks, agent of the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, for documents in his custody and that of Sir Francis Hutchinson, including the six volumes ('A-F') of the Down Survey, 27 June 1797; and (ff. vi-vii) a list of all the baronies covered by the six volumes, with surveyors' names and scales (including those in the missing Vol. 'A'), late 18th cent.

2. ff. 79-94. Blank leaves intended to contain the survey of co. Carlow ('Catherlagh'), the first annotated by the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne in pencil, circa 1920, 'The maps of this county (six in number) found their way to the Auditor General's office in Dublin and are now in the Dublin Record Office'. They have apparently now been destroyed.
