A. 'The Barony of Duleeke in the County of East Meath [Leinster] Described', by an unidentified surveyor; [1655-1656?]. No scale given. North at top. Showing boundaries of parishes (in colour) and townlands, with place-names. Rivers, areas of bog and the sea-coast (with a group of sea monsters and human figures) are indicated, and some buildings shown pictorially. Cartouche decorated with scrolls and a grotesque head. Compass rose. Pasted on the verso is a covering note by Sir Francis Hutchinson, when he returned the map to [William Burton?] Conyngham, after comparing it with the map of the same barony then in possession of the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, in the lost Down Survey, Vol. 'A'. The map therefore probably belonged, like the letterbooks at Add. 72858-72864 above,to the descendants of Maj.-Gen. Henry Conyngham, second husband of the 1st Lord Shelburne's widow. The note also mentions a map of the barony of Slane, co. Meath, apparently given to Lord Lansdowne by Conyngham and presumably lost with the rest of Vol. 'A'. The 6th Marquess of Lansdowne has added in red ink on the covering note that he bought this map from Mr N. Massey of Cork, Oct. 1920.
Mounted on a large sheet of hand-made paper, worn at the edges.
50 x 71cm.
