PETTY PAPERS. VOL. XXV. Petty's account, written in the third person, of the making of the Down Survey, with the heading added in the hand of James Matthews, 'Sir William Petty's History of the Survey of Ireland in 18 chapters'; [late 1659-early 1660]. Chiefly in a single clerical hand, with a few autograph alterations by Petty to the first two chapters. The account was drawn up to answer criticisms of his conduct of the Survey and distributions by the surveyor-general, Benjamin Worsley, Sir Hierome Sankey and others, and includes transcripts of many official instructions, petitions and other documents concerning it, several of which are also preserved separately in Add. 72877 below. This volume, mentioned by Petty in his will, is one of three manuscripts of the 'History'. The others are in the libraries of Trinity College (also a clerical copy with a few corrections by Petty, formerly in the possession of the Southwell family and sold at the De Clifford sale in 1834) and the King's Inns, Dublin (an 18th cent. copy of the present manuscript). The three were collated and published as The History of the Survey of Ireland commonly called the Down Survey, ed. T. Larcom. Dublin: Irish Archaeological Society, 1851. See also Reflections upon some Persons and Things in Ireland, by Letters to and from Dr Petty (London, 1660). Paginated in pencil, 'i-vi, 1-657', perhaps by the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne. With the bookplates of Henry Petty, Lord Shelburne, 1707, and the Marquesses of Lansdowne. With the note by Matthews 'to be numbered in the catalogue [of Lansdowne's MSS] 686*' Old press-mark in pencil, 'DD1'. Formerly Bowood Vol. 23.
