PETTY PAPERS. VOL. XLII. Medical lectures, works, and notes relating to medical practice; [1645?]-[1676?]. The present order of what was originally a collection of loose items was determined at the time of the 19th century binding, and is not systematic. In some cases portions of the same work have been separated; cross references are given where necessary below. Preceded (f. i) by a table of contents by the 6th Marquess of Lansdowne and a label (f. ii) of James Matthews, 'Sir William Pettys medical Studies & other Papers (10)'. For a few papers relating to Petty's medical appointments, see Add. 72857, ff. 80-86v, above. For an item by item list, see Slatter, 'Report', I, pp. 19-27. Formerly Bowood Vol. 3 (James Matthews' Vol. 10).
Paper; ff. ii + 333. Mounted on guards and bound, not always in accurate chronological order, in brown leather, gilt-ruled and blind-stamped, 19th cent. 385 x 280mm.
1. ff. 1-7v. Medical lecture in four chapters, the second in a series of which items 4 and 8 below constitute the full series; [1650]. Fair copy by an amanusensis (of an autograph version, item 8, ff. 113-130, below). Latin.
2. f. 8. List of London tradesmen, with (on the verso) a list of eight methods by which Petty planned to make his fortune; [1647-1648]. Autograph. The latter includes the 'Noscomium Academicum' discussed in his Advice to Mr Samuel Hartlib (1648).
3. f. 9. Incomplete verses on Dr William Harvey; [circa 1649?]. In the hand of an amanuensis(?), but the last ten lines autograph. Latin.
4. ff. 10-21v. Medical lecture in six chapters, the first of a series of which those in item 1 and item 8 below are the remainder; [1650]. Draft, partly autograph. Latin. For further sheets, see items 24 (ff. 272-273) and 30 (ff. 327-328) below.
5. ff. 22-78. Anatomical lectures; [1652]. Autograph drafts. Latin.
6. ff. 79-91. 'De Arthritide Exercitatio Medica habita apud Medicorum Academiam tertio post Pascham die anno 1646 Parisiys'; 1646. Autograph draft. Latin. For another version, see item 10 below.
7. ff. 92-112. Record of prescriptions given by Petty to London patients, with names and dates; 1650-1651. Autograph. Latin. Includes an index of names for 1650 and a list of names with illnesses and some addresses for 1651.
8. ff. 113-191v. Five medical lectures given by Petty at Oxford; 1650. Autograph, with some additions and corrections. Latin. Beg. 'Lectio Secunda'; see also items 1 and 4 above.
9. ff. 192-201v. Numbered lists of plants with Latin and vernacular names, arranged into categories, followed by lists of plants seen at various locations about London, including 'Mr Labram's garden'; [1653?]. In an unidentified hand, possibly that of an amanuensis. Possibly to be identified with the work 'De Plantis' of 1653 in Petty's list of his writings in 1671 (Petty Papers, II, p. 261).
10. ff. 202-207. Another autograph version of item 6 above.
11. f. 208. Note on kinds of sleep; [1640s?]. Autograph. Latin.
12. ff. 209-227v. Descriptions of experiments in chemistry; [1645?]. In the hand of the same amanuensis as item 9 above. Possibly a version of 'An history of 7 monthes practise in a Chymicall Laboratory', 1645, in Petty's list of his works drawn up in 1671 (Petty Papers, II, p. 261). See item 20 below for a further sheet belonging to this work.
13. ff. 228-230v. Miscellaneous notes by Petty, chiefly on his physical symptoms and on the administration of a hospital, followed (ff. 229v-230) by alphabetically arranged lists of trades; 1647, n.d. Autograph. The two last are probably related to Samuel Hartlib's projects.

21. ff. 256-257v. Descriptions of diseases, 'De lue Venerea' and 'De Peripneumonia'; [1646?]. Autograph draft. Latin. The former appears in Petty's 1671 list of his writings (Petty Papers, II, p. 261).
22. ff. 258-268. Observations in medical matters; [1652?]. Autograph. Latin. Probably to be identified with 'Observationes Medicae et Praxis' in Petty's 1671 list of his works (Petty Papers, II, p. 261). For the English version, see Add. 72892, ff. 10-15, below.
