1. ff. 1-36. Papers concerning shipping, navigation and Petty's experimental 'double bottom' boat; circa 1661-circa 1811. Partly printed. Many documents concerning the last are printed in The Double Bottom or Twin-hulled Ship of Sir William Petty, ed. 6th Marquess of Lansdowne. Roxburghe Club (Oxford, 1931); but see his pencilled note (f. i) that the present items were not discovered until after the publication of this edition. See also the 'Treatise on Navall Philosophy in Three Parts', [1671], Add. MS 72854, ff. 99-104, above.
a. ff. 1-6. Dialogue between A and B concerning varieties of shipping, [circa 1661]. Autograph. Beg. 'What is the reason there is so great Variety of shipping in the world ...'; incomplete, breaking off in mid-dialogue, although no pages are missing. G49.
b. f. 7. Paper in twelve points recommending the Royal Society's sponsorship of the double bottom project; [circa 1664]. Not autograph, but apparently by Petty or one of his associates. Written two and a half years after the first public experiment with the 'double bottom'. G38.
c. ff. 8-26v. 'A dialogue concerning ship[p]ing', between A and B concerning the 'double bottom' boat; [1680s]. In the hands of Thomas Dance and one other amanuensis with an autograph addition, and followed by an autograph sheet (f. 26) on the dimensions of the ship, which appears to be an addition to the dialogue. Beg. 'I never saw so many ships in the River as this day ...'. G37, G39.
d. ff. 27-28v. 'An Attempt to demonstrate that an Engine may be fix'd in a good ship ... to give her fresh way in a calm'; 7 Nov. 1685. Printed in Fitzmaurice, Life, pp. 122-124. In a clerical hand and signed with initials which may be 'B.P.'. Probably not by Petty. H1.
e. f. 29. Summary list of 16 topics connected with the regulation of ports and sea traffic; [1680s?]. In the hand of James Waller. G40.
f. ff. 30-31v. A list by Petty of 28 numbered subjects to be contained in 'A Compleat Treatis of Navigation'; 1685. In the hand of James Waller. The last item 'The art of making seawater fresh' has been added to the list in a different hand; see further the papers on this subject in Add. 72897, ff. 79-99v, below. This paper may also be connected with the project referred to as 'Schooles at sea', in Petty's list, 'Desiderata Considerata', 1685, in Add. 72866, ff. 1-2, above. Sir William Petty's Plan for a System of Instruction relative to the Business of the Marine, in the same words as the original; but with the articles transposed, and marginaltitles, supplemental articles and remarks added, comp. Sir Samuel Bentham, dated Chatham 1779, but printed in or after 1811, the watermark date. Printed broadside. Slatter, 'Report, II, p. 280, points out that many of the points are derived from the preceding paper. G36.
