In two parts, 'The History of the Common Practices in Dying' and 'Generall Observations upon dying'. Written as part of the Royal Society's 'History of Trades' project, and printed in Thomas Sprat, The History of the Royal Society (1667), pp. 284-306; see Keynes, Bibliography, No. 15. Followed (ff. 31-37) by recipes for dyes of different colours, including 'The matters of dying stuffe', in the hand of one of the amanuenses employed in the preceding, with autograph corrections. The last item includes the label (f. 30) by James Matthews covering the whole of this category, 'Papers concerning the Manufactory of Woollens, Art of dying; printing; tanning; & making salt (14)'.
