BLENHEIM PAPERS. Vol. CCXLV. Map of the lordship of Mindelheim, 12 Nov.-9 Dec. 1705. No cartographer or scale given, but approx. 1:67000. Cardinal points; north at top. 491 mm. x 54l mm. (sheet). 383 mm. x 440 mm. (map). Ink and coloured washes on paper. Extent: Kircheim (north), Overegg (south), River Wertach (east), River Günz (west). Miniature views of Günzburg and Burgau above upper border. Boundaries of Mindelheim and neighbouring jurisdictions, towns, villages, hills, rivers, ponds, woods and cultivated and uncultivated land indicated. Rulers of neighbouring lands named. Abbeys, castles, posting stage, large and small settlements differentiated. French note beneath lower border mentions Imperial decree of 27 April 1705 taking lordship into Imperial possession and gives statistical data on lordship. Endorsed 'Chart Num° (4) of the Principality of Mindelheim'. The map is based on information and a sketch map given by the Imperial and Court Chanceries to Marlborough during his visit to Vienna, 12-23 November 1705, and was executed at a cost of 1 ducat under Stepney's supervision before being sent to the Duke with Stepney's letter of 9 December 1705 (Add. MS. 61143, f. 172). It was published on a smaller scale, lacking views of Günzburg and Burgau, and with some names and annotations anglicised (often incorrectly), as 'Map of the Principality of Mindelheim as delineated in 1706' (sic) in Coxe, Memoirs of John, Duke of Marlborough, I, opposite p. 525. The map is discussed in W. Eberle, Das Reichsfürstentum Mindelheim unter Marlborough 1705-1715, Bayreuth, 1917, pp. 101-103; and in Stepney's correspondence with Marlborough and Cardonnel (Add. MSS. 61143, 61412, passim).
