BLENHEIM PAPERS. Vol. CCCLXXXI (ff. 116).
(1) Papers of Thomas Brudenell, 1st Earl of Cardigan, mostly relating to measures against recusants in Northamptonshire and the sequestration of Brudenell's estates; 1606-1654, n.d. Partly printed. Partly Latin and German. At the end (ff. 63-64) are 'Verses on the Deane of X Church', i.e. Richard Corbett, Bishop of Oxford and (1632) Norwich, viz: — (a) 'Natura negat facit indignatio versum: An apologetike ryme vindicating D[octor] C[orbett] deane of C[hrist] C[hurch] from the aspersion of adulatory verses published under his name', beg. 'False on his deanery, false: no more: I'll lay', for other copies of which see Add. MSS. 21433, f. 120b and 25303, f. 131, and The Poems of Richard Corbett, ed. J. A. W. Bennett and H. R. Trevor Roper, Oxford, 1955, p. xxii. f. 63 (b) Epigram on the performance of Barton Holiday's Technogamia before James I in 1621, beg. 'At Christchurch marriage shew'd before the Kinge'. Printed in A. à Wood, Athenae Oxonienses, 1817 ed., III, p. 522. f. 63; — (c) Verse beg. 'Tell me for Gods sake Christchurch what you meane', for another copy of which see also Add. MS. 61683, f. 75. ff. 64-64b. Cardigan's hand was extremely variable (cf. Stowe MS. 743, f. 24, Add. MS. 29550, f. 58 and Egerton MS. 2986, f. 157), but a number of endorsements and documents (e.g. ff. 31b, 45, 47), as well as the verses, are apparently in his hand. His papers were removed from his house at Deene, co. Northt., were stored elsewhere and recovered by Cardigan in 1660: see Joan Wake, The Brudenells of Deane, 2nd ed., 1954, pp. 132-133, 164-165. The present papers were apparently never regained by Cardigan and may have passed into the custody of the Spencers at that time. In 1881, they were amongst the former Sunderland Library in the Bachelors' Gallery at Blenheim: H.M.C. 8th Report, pt. 1, p. 27. ff. 1-64b.
(2) Papers of the Craven family of Appletreewick, 1626-1686, n.d.; comprising a draft quitclaim by Elizabeth Peasley to William Craven, 1626, and letters by B. Akleford, a servant of William, Earl of Craven, d. 1697. John, Baron Craven of Ryton, d. 1648, married Elizabeth, daughter of William, 2nd Baron Spencer, and these items may have come into the Blenheim archive through this connection. On the Craven family, see W. Stavert, 'Notes on the Pedigree of Cravens of Appletreewick', Yorkshire Archaeological. Journal, XIII, 1894-1895, pp. 441-480. ff. 65-67.
