FLEMING PAPERS. Vol. LVI. 18 Sept. 1924-15 Dec. 1927.
ff. iv + 47. 276 x 223mm. Ring binder with hard, black cover. It was advertised as a ‘scholastic notebook’.
Spine of the notebook has a label on it; the only legible words are ‘pneumo coccus, killing by blood’.
Label inside the cover for ‘W. Isacke, Manufacturing Stationer, Printer… and Account Book maker, 133 Praed St., London.’
This notebook has been divided into three sections, the first of which is unnamed. However, as it is a ring binder it is difficult to know if the papers are in the correct order. The notebook seems to have originally housed plain paper and this has been supplemented with other pieces of plain and lined paper.
Notebook includes:
Section one: 18 Sept. 1924-18 June 1928.
ff. 1-12. Lysozyme
i) On coli’s septicaemic streptococcus
ii) Experiment examining aqueous and vitreous humour
iii) Different animals on streptococcus jennies
iv) Experiment to see whether Jennis streptococcus is resistant to lysozyme
v) Virulent and avirulent streptococcus – in agar cultures and the effect of tears
vi) Versus antiseptics on lyso in agar plate
vii) On killing in slide cells, includes a note in red ink ‘therefore lysozyme no effect on killing’
viii) Intracellular killing
ix) Rate of diffusion in agar
x) Experiments with plates imbedded with streaks of egg and nasal mucus, includes coloured diagrams of results
Section two: 24March 1925-14 Oct. 1926.
ff. 13-23. Intracellular Digestion
i) Autolysis and lysis with egg
ii) Different strains of staphylococci – experiment to see if they are killed by blood equally
iii) Immediate killing – AF defibrinated blood and staphylococcus
iv) Inhibition of growth of staphylococcus in leucocytes (on bench overnight). Includes diagrams with typical example of leucocytes and typical bacteria outside leucocytes
v) Do washed leucocytes kill without serum and kill staphylococcus in slide cells?
vi) Rate of killing of staphylococcus by leucocytes
Section three: 1 Nov.-13 Dec. 1927.
ff. 24-47. Bactericidal power of blood in virulent (non – phagocylable) pneumococci
i) Does blood kill virulent pneumococci which are not phagocyted?
ii) Typed notes – killing of pneumococci by normal blood and blood to which immune serum has been added, includes handwritten notes about slide cells and results after sample were put in an incubator for 24 hours
iii) Experiment examining the effect of carbolic on staphylococcus and pneumo in blood
iv) Pneumo killing by blood:
a. Comparison between killing staphylococcus and pneumo
b. Pneumo killing by blood – is it killed by cells alone or is serum necessary?
c. Pneumo killing by blood – properties of sensitivity of substance in serum
d. Killing of pneumo by blood and salted blood
v) Absorption of serum with pneumococcus, found:
a. More killing when immune serum used therefore less absorption or in presence of immune serum small amount of proadin will act and kill pneumo?
b. Opsonic to staphylococcus rather less than when immune serum used therefore possibility more absorption of opsonic
‘complement’
c. Little difference in pneumo opsonic so no specific absorption of pneumo opsonic in presence of immune serum
vi) Does serum sensitise bugs? Found no sensation or sensitivity can be removed by washing in a salt solution
vii) Absorption of serum with pneumococci – found no evidence that in presence of immune serum there is more absorption of sensitive of substance from serum
viii) Phagocytosis virulent pneumococci
ix) Comparison phagocytosis different ways with phagocytate pneumo
x) Experiment with non-phagocytable friedlander (John)
